EPG is seeking a Paleontological Field Lead to be based out of the Salt Lake City office. This is a seasonal, hourly position for projects in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The Field Lead would be responsible for leading a crew of two or more in carrying out paleontological surveys, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications and skills required

  • Must be able to walk seven to eight miles per day over variable terrain, take notes and photographs, and carry field gear
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to travel
  • Must be able to work in adverse conditions
  • Knowledge of handheld GPS units such as Trimble

Education and experience required

  • B.S. in geology, minimum; M.S. in paleontology preferred, or seeking graduate degree
  • Must have knowledge of geological and paleontological methods and techniques
  • Experience in the Mesozoic Era and/or the Paleogene Period preferred

Job responsibilities include the following 

  • Supervise a team of two or more field assistants in surveying and limited excavations
  • Properly record fossil localities, and geologic and stratigraphic information
  • Collect scientifically significant fossils
  • Assist with fossil preparation and identification

Typical schedule

  • 10- day sessions with 4 days off between


  • Seasonal, hourly position for projects in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah
  • Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience
  • Per Diem and lodging are provided for all project work
